On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will move northeast across North America and directly over Fort Erie. During the eclipse, the moon will cover the sun, causing the sky to darken for 3 minutes and 46 seconds, making Fort Erie a top viewing location. This once-in-a-lifetime event has not been seen in Niagara since 1925 and will not return to Niagara until 2144. The Town of Fort Erie and its partners are engaged in extensive emergency and event planning to ensure a safe experience for the highly anticipated volume of visitors expected to the Niagara Region.

Depending on exactly where you are along the path of totality and how close you are to its centre-line, the duration of totality changes.
The longest duration total eclipse seen from Canada for this event will be in the location that is farthest to the southwest along the path of totality, as well as closest to the centre of the path (see the dotted line on the map below, click to enlarge).
That distinction goes to Fort Erie, Ont., where observers will see the Moon completely cover the Sun for 3 minutes and 46 seconds! Other locations along the northeastern shores of Lake Erie and southeastern Niagara Peninsula will see at least 3 minutes and 30 seconds of totality.
