The Town of Fort Erie purchased the Bay Beach property in 2001. A variety of development scenarios were explored since that time. In 2015, the Town undertook the Bay Beach Master Plan. This was done to establish community consensus on how the property should develop in the short and long term. The Plan also helped establish an implementation strategy.
Development of the Bay Beach lands should support Crystal Beach as a mixed-use destination with recreational, commercial and residential/rental accommodation facilities and activities. The Plan will also serve as a catalyst in stimulating growth and development for a year-round tourist/recreational destination.
A community-driven strategy resulted from an extensive public consultation process. The process involved hundreds of community members and stakeholder groups over 6 months in 2015. As a result, the Bay Beach Master Plan was approved by Council on January 11, 2016, along with a strategy to commence implementation of the Plan.
Bay Beach Park opened to the public on May 26, 2019.
