Fire Prevention consists of two full-time Fire Prevention Officers and one full-time Fire Prevention Inspector, reporting to the Fire Chief. Some of the Fire Prevention duties consist of fire investigation, fire inspections and enforcement of the Ontario Fire Code, complaints and Business License inspections for Ontario Fire Code compliance.
Public Education is a priority to the Fort Erie Fire Department. About a dozen volunteer public educators are dedicated to that purpose. A volunteer public safety team has been assembled to assist in the door to door smoke alarm program called S.A.F.E (Smoke Alarms Fort Erie). Other events are Sparky's Community Safety Day and numerous school and festival visits.
The Fort Erie Fire Department is comprised of a 100% volunteer suppression complement. The Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief respond to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents and other calls as necessary.
The Town of Fort Erie has a coverage area of approximately 168 square kilometres (100 square miles) with a population of approximately 30,000. During the summer, the population increases to approximately 45,000 residents. The Department responses to approximately 1,200 calls per year.
The Niagara River runs along the east side of the municipality. On the south side, Lake Erie runs along the entire length of the municipality. The shores of the Niagara River and Lake Erie combined are approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) in length.
