The Ontario Fire Code requires every home in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every level of the dwelling, outside of all sleeping areas. Also, a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm is required outside of all sleeping areas when there are any natural gas appliances, a wood stove or fireplace, or an attached garage.
The Fort Erie Fire Department strongly recommends the use of smoke and CO alarms with 10-year built-in batteries.
If you have questions about the location of smoke alarms and CO alarms, or if you want to schedule an appointment for an in-home fire safety inspection, please contact the Fire Department at 905.871.1600, extension 5600.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Resources:
The Fort Erie Fire Department has committed to educating residents about fire prevention and fire safety through our Public Education division. The program was created to educate residents on how to maintain their smoke and CO alarms, practice safe cooking techniques, and what to do in an emergency.
A team of Public Educators will come to your dwelling to conduct a fire safety assessment to ensure you have the correct number of alarms in all the correct locations. We will make sure that all alarms are working properly and are not expired. If there are deficiencies, there will be no fines or penalties issued. Making sure everyone is safe is the most important goal!
